Uelsmann was born in Detroit, Michigan. When he was 14 an interest for photography sparked within him. He believed that through photography he could live a different life, outside of his own, to live a life that would be captured through his lens. After highschool he went on to Roshester Institution of Technology and earned a Bachelors of art from there. Then got a Masters in Fine Arts degree from Indiana University. Then began teaching photography at the University of Florida Uelsmann is a master printer, producing composite photographs with multiple negatives and extensive darkroom work. He never sought to follow the rules or boundaries put in place by the Photo Secessionists or other realists at the time. He simply wanted to make what he desired in his imagination to come to life.
